Motorhome Hire Excess Reduction Insurance

All of the motorhomes and campervans on the FMH fleet are fully comprehensively insured, covered by roadside assistance/breakdown insurance and under manufacturer’s warranty. Our fleet is well insured and the insurance cover is included in our hire prices.

However, as with most vehicle hire companies, there is an excess (also known as a deductible) in our insurance. In our case the standard excess is €2000 which means the hirer is liable for the first €2000 worth of damage in the event of a claim for accidental damage.

In keeping with our ‘No hidden extras’ policy, we don’t offer expensive additional cover when you arrive to collect your vehicle. There are many specialist providers of this insurance and we recommend you buy this cover from one of them if you are eligible for it.

This insurance is known as “Excess Reduction Insurance” and it can be put in place to cover some or all of the excess. Here is a *summary of the cover on offer from the companies which our hirers use most frequently:

Some US travel and credit card insurance policies offer the option to insure rental vehicle excesses so we suggest you source cover locally prior to your trip.

Before taking out this insurance, do check this risk is not already covered by your existing travel, credit card or other insurance. Some such insurance policies do cover rental vehicle excess and if yours does, just make sure it includes motorhome or campervan rental (rather than just car rental) before you rely upon it.

Don’t forget, this cover is not available at our depot so if you want to have it in place and are eligible for it, you should take it out online (or over the telephone) at least one day before your hire start.

*This information was checked in February 2018 but insurance providers change the terms and prices of their cover without notice so do check the latest details of the cover and price on the provider’s website before taking out this insurance.
