France is blessed with thousands of pretty villages, with literally a new one to explore every few kilometers! But with over 32,000 to choose from you can’t possibly visit them all – unless you’re visiting for a couple of years! So, how do you arrive at a shortlist that ensures every village you see is a stunning reflection of French charm, history and tradition?
We think the association “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” (The Most Beautiful Villages of France) provides a very straightforward answer: the 153 member villages share an ambition to retain their exceptional village charm and traditions and invite you to discover their history, culture and authenticity.
The villages are spread throughout 69 departments in 21 regions. A quick visit to the association’s website will give you the full selection of villages, identified in an alphabetical list, by department or on a map, so planning which ones to visit is easy. Click on the entry for any village to discover the “Must Sees”, photo gallery, gastronomic highlights and contact details for each tourism office.
If you already have an outline plan in mind for your trip, try and fit in a few of these stunning villages, or if you are looking for inspiration and a theme for your trip, you could just hop from village to village.

But remember, many of these villages are thousands of years old and their streets don’t lend themselves to exploring by car, let alone motorhomes, so if you are village hopping, don’t forget to hire some bikes so you can always be sure to get right into the heart of every village and unearth its hidden treasures.
