Never mind mulled wine, try my mulled cider recipe
Just about everybody has heard of, and probably tasted, mulled wine, but have you tried mulled cider? You can even make this one-pot recipe on your campervan hob.
Try my family recipe for a delicious alternative to the more traditional mulled wine recipes, and enjoy it hot when you get back from a long winter walk.
Mulled Cider recipe
Serves 6-8
- 1.1 litres medium or dry cider
- 550 ml unsweetened orange juice
- 6 tablespoons Cointreau or Grand Marnier
- 75g Demerara sugar (a brown partially refined sugar with a natural caramel-like flavor)
- 1 stick cinnamon
- 2 star anise
- 12 cloves
- 1 small orange
- Orange slices to serve
Put the cider (the alcoholic version, not apple juice), orange juice, Cointreau (or Grand Marnier) and Demerara sugar into a large pan and gently heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Add the cinnamon stick and star anise.
Press the cloves into the orange and float on top. Bring briefly to a boil then simmer very gently for 8 minutes. Remove the whole orange, cinnamon stick and star anise then add fresh orange slices and serve straight away in heatproof glasses or mugs. (Can be chilled and gently reheated too – just put the orange slices in when you reheat).
Who says you shouldn’t mix apples and oranges? Trust me, they are wonderful together!
